AI Search Traffic Benchmarks for Online Stores (2026): Growth, Conversion Rate, Revenue Per Visit & AI Visibility Scores

Real 2026 benchmarks for AI shopping traffic from Adobe Analytics — how fast ChatGPT and AI assistant referrals are growing, how much better they convert, and the AI visibility score most product pages fail.

AI assistants have quietly become a real shopping channel. The question every online store owner is now asking is blunt: how much traffic do ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini actually send to online stores — and is that traffic worth anything? Below are the 2026 benchmarks from Adobe Analytics' data on more than one trillion visits to U.S. retail sites, plus the one number most stores have never checked: whether AI can read their product pages at all.

AI shopping traffic benchmarks 2026 at a glance

Benchmark2026 figurePeriod
AI-referred traffic growth to U.S. retail sites+393% year over yearQ1 2026
AI-referred traffic growth+269% year over yearMarch 2026
AI-referred traffic growth+138% year over yearMay 2026
Cumulative growth since tracking began+1,324% (more than 14x)Oct 2024 – May 2026
Conversion rate vs non-AI traffic+42%March 2026
Conversion rate vs non-AI traffic+54%May 2026
Revenue per visit vs non-AI traffic+37%March 2026

Source: Adobe Digital Insights / Adobe Analytics, 2026. A note on how to read these: the +1,324% figure is growth on a channel that started near zero in October 2024, so the percentages describe momentum, not size. AI referrals are still a small slice of total sessions for most stores — but they are the fastest-growing slice, and as the table below shows, the highest-quality one.

Does AI traffic actually convert? The 2025 → 2026 reversal

Until recently the honest answer was no. In March 2025, visitors arriving from AI assistants converted 38% worse than other traffic, and human traffic was worth 128% more per visit. Twelve months later that flipped completely.

Metric (AI traffic vs non-AI traffic)March 2026May 2026
Conversion rate+42%+54%
Engagement rate+12%+15%
Time spent on site+48%+53%
Pages browsed per visit+13%+23%
Revenue per visit+37%

The pattern is consistent across both readings: someone who arrives from an AI assistant has already had the comparison conversation. They are not at the top of the funnel — they arrived with a shortlist, and your store was on it.

The number most stores have never checked: can AI read your product pages?

This is where the 2026 data gets uncomfortable. Adobe scored retail sites with its AI Content Visibility Checker — a measure of how much of a page a large language model can actually parse and use:

Page typeAverage AI visibility scoreWhat that means
Retailer homepages75%Roughly a quarter of homepage content is not optimised for LLMs
Individual product pages66%About 34% of product page content is inaccessible to AI

Product pages score worse than homepages, and product pages are where the purchase decision happens. An assistant that cannot parse your specifications, price, availability or shipping terms will not recommend the product — it will recommend a competitor whose page it could read. Invisible is not the same as bad; it is worse, because you never see the impression you did not get.

How many shoppers are actually doing this?

Adobe surveyed more than 5,000 consumers in 2026:

That last figure is the strategic one. Shoppers trust the answer. If the assistant names three stores and yours is not among them, you did not lose a click — you lost the comparison before it started.

What this means for a small online store

You do not need an enterprise budget to be readable by an AI assistant. In practice the gap between visible and invisible stores comes down to a short list of fundamentals:

  1. Let the AI crawlers in. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Bingbot. A blanket block is still the single most common self-inflicted wound.
  2. Put the facts in text, not in images. Price, availability, materials, sizing, shipping and returns rendered only inside a picture or loaded by client-side script are effectively invisible.
  3. Use structured data. Product, Offer, AggregateRating, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema give an assistant machine-readable facts instead of a guess.
  4. Answer the question the shopper actually asks. Assistants quote pages that answer "is this good for X", "how does it compare to Y", "does it fit Z" — not pages that only list features.
  5. Keep the feed honest. Out-of-stock items and stale prices train assistants to stop citing you.
  6. Measure it. Segment referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com in your analytics, and track whether the number moves.

Methodology and sources

All figures on this page come from Adobe Digital Insights / Adobe Analytics 2026 reporting on AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites, based on more than one trillion visits, plus Adobe's 2026 survey of over 5,000 consumers. Figures are reported as published; where two reporting periods exist (March and May 2026), both are shown rather than averaged. Percentages describe relative change versus non-AI traffic or versus the same period a year earlier, not absolute traffic share.

Check where your store stands

The benchmarks above describe the market. The only number that changes your revenue is your own. iteractive.ai runs a free visibility scan that asks AI assistants about your category and shows whether your store gets named, what your product pages look like to a model, and which fixes move the score — in about 60 seconds, no credit card.
